Custom Furniture, Seat Weaving, and Furniture Restoration
Zane Shapen is a woodworker based in Portland, Oregon, specializing in custom furniture builds, Danish cord and cane weaving, and furniture repair and restoration.

Furniture Commissions & Design
I work with clients to design and build custom freestanding furniture. Examples include: casework (credenzas, stereo cabinets, nightstands), flatwork (desks, dining tables, coffee tables, side tables), and seating (chairs, benches, stools). If you have an idea for a custom piece, I can help you bring your vision to life.
Cane Weaving
Hand woven cane seats and shelving are available in a variety of patterns, depending on design. Cane repair is possible and determined on a case-by-case basis. Press cane or sheet cane replacement is also available. A common example of sheet/press cane is found on Marcel Breuer’s Cesca chair.
Danish Cord weaving & Conversions
Danish cord is a furled paper cord commonly found on Scandinavian furniture. I can reweave worn seats, or convert chairs or benches to Danish cord. Conversions are dependent on the desired weave pattern and construction of the chair.
Structural repairs
Many of the adhesives used in the construction of vintage furniture have not held up well over time, leading to failed joints and broken parts. If your chair or table is wobbly or parts have been damaged, they are usually completely serviceable, and with modern adhesives will last for many years. I can repair or replicate broken drawer pulls, handles, chair parts, table parts, and cabinet bases.
